The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 585K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, modified starches imports reduced modestly to $540M in 2024. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2013 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports decreased by -7.3% against 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $583M in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
Thailand (229K tons), Vietnam (179K tons) and the United States (24K tons) were the main suppliers of modified starches imports to China, with a combined 84% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +29.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest modified starches suppliers to China were Thailand ($207M), Vietnam ($114M) and the United States ($52M), together comprising 69% of total imports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +29.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2024, the average modified starches import price amounted to $1,051 per ton, which is down by -5.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,108 per ton, and then dropped in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,350 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($637 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2024, overseas shipments of dextrins and other modified starches increased by 27% to 199K tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports recorded a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2024 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, modified starches exports stood at $229M in 2024. Over the period under review, exports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2024 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
The Philippines (40K tons), Russia (34K tons) and Indonesia (22K tons) were the main destinations of modified starches exports from China, with a combined 48% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +49.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($58M) remains the key foreign market for dextrins and other modified starches exports from China, comprising 25% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($21M), with a 9% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 9% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value to Russia stood at +38.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+36.5% per year) and Indonesia (+20.9% per year).
In 2024, the average modified starches export price amounted to $1,149 per ton, falling by -20.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 53%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $1,762 per ton in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($1,689 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($513 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
